Paris or Prague ?

Never been to either.

Have been to Barcelona/Madrid - loved those cities.... enjoy picturesque scenery, medieval, architecture, entertainment...

Even though I%26#39;m passionate about Paris, I think I%26#39;d say Prague. It is a truly remarkable time capsule of architecture. It won%26#39;t always be that way as tourism continues to increase. Paris won%26#39;t change much over the next 10 years, but Prague certainly will. Go now, while it%26#39;s still charming.

|||

Truffant, I am afraid it is already too late. Went there last fall, hordes of turists everywhere.

|||

Truffaut, is again right, I have the strongest bias toward Paris but Prague is unique since each new architecture style just add itself in the city without having to destruct the previous one. THere where not Haussmann in Prague.It is so romantic and for the time being not too touristy.

Moominek, I was there in 2000 and it was busy, but not overwhelmingly so. Did you go to Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad)? We began our trip there and nobody was too excited about going there. It turned out to be everybody%26#39;s favorite. It was exquisite. I%26#39;ll never forget a dinner there of grilled rabbit in a sauce of wild cherries picked that morning from the mountainside behind the restaurant.

|||

Oh, and the restaurant was at the top of the tower (the only remaining part) of a 10th century castle.

|||

Truffant,

Unfortunately, I did not get to go to Karlove Vary. I went to Prague and Cracow and it was not the first time for me in Cracow, so I cannot judge, but it was the first time for my fiance in both cities. He liked Cracow more, because, as he said, %26quot;Prague was too turisty%26quot;. I am afraid that the secret leaked out. Also, I got the impression that it is the place for the rest of Europe (lots of British and German turists at least) to party. Beer is still cheap there I guess :))

But I agree that the architecture is beautiful. Some parts of it did not even seem real, they kind of looked to me like decorations to a Disney movie that takes place Once upon a time, far, far away...

Unless you enjoy the weight of medieval architecture bearing down on you every where you turn that is black with soot and age, I would vote for Paris. Paris has some buildings and statues that are almost as old but theyve spent the last 40 years polishing them. Prague spent the last 40 years entombed, along with the statues, in communism.

I dont even need to mention the superior food, chocolate, and wine in France.

|||

We will be going to both cities in 5 weeks. I will report back and let you know what I think...but I%26#39;m prejudiced towards Paris, if only because my very bad French is way better than my very bad Czech.

|||

The good news about Prague is that English is spoken widely those days.

Truffaut,

Wow, your brief description had my mouth watering, and I don%26#39;t just mean for the wild cherry sauce! I%26#39;ve been wanting to go to Prague for a few years now, and if I didn%26#39;t just get a girlfriend all excited about going to PAris next winter, I%26#39;d go to Prague instead in a heartbeat. Oh well, I hope it%26#39;s charm will still be intact in 2007! By the way, and way off the topic, have you ever been to Santiago, Chile? That is another destination I have dreamed of. I just wondered if you%26#39;d been, since you seem rather worldy, to me!
