Two quick questions.....(walking and picnics)

I enjoy getting up early in the morning and going for a 1/2 hour walk before breakfast. Will we be dressed inappropriately or %26quot;stand out%26quot; as tourists if we have on conservative workout clothes and gym shoes?

Part 2: We%26#39;re staying at the Hotel le Walt in the 7th and wondered if there were a place to purchase some bread/cheese/wine and enjoy a picnic outdoors?

Merci.

We went out early about 6 am and around 7:30 in our working class neighborhood. Honestly, I never saw anyone in work out type clothing...but, these are folks heading to work. I saw lots of people in business clothing, some jeans and sweaters, and high end business attire. It would be different in better weather, it was quite cold to be out taking a leisure stroll. Anyone who lives in Paris have a comment on exercise type attire?

Purchasing bread/cheese/wine in the 7th.

You can try Rue Cler. There%26#39;s a couple grocery stores on the road to like a Franprix. I believe that%26#39;s in the 7th. It%26#39;s about half way between Napoleon%26#39;s Tomb and la Tour Eiffel.

Picnic locations...benches along the Seine %26amp; across the river on the Trocadero%26#39;s lawns.

I%26#39;m not sure if you can picnic in front of L%26#39;Ecole Militaire which is the big park on the non-river side of la Tour Eiffel. There%26#39;s park benches there.

There are parts of Champ de Mars that restrict access on the grass, and other parts that are ok...

%26quot;Pelouse interdite%26quot; means %26quot;keep off the grass%26quot;

Hello Cinderella,

The one time we see French in workout clothes is when they are working out.............So sure it will be fine and noone will even notice you.

Stop in any of their super markets (usually rather small and often quite crowded) in your area for picnic stuff, There are surely some convenient. They also sell 2/4 slices in a package of ham (jambon), chicken...turkey...nice desserts, fruit and juices.......plus lotsa sweet stuff.

Try to notice the difference between a regular market and a little one that is opened in the odd hours.....(a French version of a 7-11?). The small ones usually have a variety of fruits displayed in front, are much more expensive and do not have the selection that the regular markets do.

Its a great idea...........have fun.

Cinderella,

I am trying hard this morning but, for the life of me, I can not imagine a more pleaseant place to do jogging than Le Champs de Mars right at your hotel door ! You will see the Eiffel Tower and a lot of nice looking young men running around (lol)

If I remember right the long run is about 2 kilometres. Do not worry about it I used to run every morning in Les Tuileries in (well, let be polite and said un-conservative) workout clothes without any problems. Enjoy every second of your run and your savour your picnic. Bon voyage.

Many thanks for your input....leave in two weeks!

About picnic, try to avoid to drink wine on a public lawn, it is not customary here (despite what is commonly believed abroad..).

It is not forbidden by the law as it is in some states in the US to drink alcohol in public (to be drunk in public is an offense, tho).

It is just unusual and could bring the police attention on you. Nothing terrible, as I guess that they should quickly understand that you are not clochard (bums) but I guess that you have better ways to enjoy Paris!

For what it is worth I%26#39;ve never been in any part of Paris that didn%26#39;t have a shop selling bread, a cake shop and some sort of small supermarket. I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll have no problem finding a place to buy picnic supplies.

I have just come back from Le Walt - boy will you enjoy it! It is a fabulous hotel in a brilliant location. I too reccomend the 5 minute walk to the gardens in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Opposite the hotel is a Shopi which is a French Supermarket. A few doors along from that is a delicious bakery. It is very very expensive so a really good idea to picnic through the day and splurge on an evening. Another good spot to picnic is Opera House steps.

I reccomend the Cafe Max which is about 3 mins walk on your right as you come out of your hotel for an evening meal.

Merci, Izzyk, for the foodie tips. If there are other restaurant in that area you would suggest pour le diner, they would be appreciated. So glad that Le Walt worked out well for you. I did quite a bit of research and review-checking on hotels, and as I was ready to book the flight and hotel through Expedia, it suddenly became a one-stop flight (in Dallas-Ft. Worth!) versus the previous non-stop jaunt, and the hotel was quite a bit more expensive! Thankfully, I didn%26#39;t panic (too much) and waited until later in the day. The non-stop flight popped back up and the hotel was only $12 more than the previous day. I don%26#39;t think I will ever understand how some of these Web sites work!
