I need train advice from world travelers..please

Researching train travel for my trip has me totally confused. (and cross-eyed) (amsterdam-paris-trier/cochem-amsterdam). The eurail.com site doesn%26#39;t have the paris to treir route, but the bahn site does. Should I book tickets in advance on the Bahn Site or can I just go to the train station on the day I plan to leave to purchase a ticket? Or- can you book your tickets the day you arrive in Paris for your departure from Paris? Does purchasing a rail pass make it all easier? I%26#39;m not as concerned with cost as I am being able to get to my destinations. Can anyone recommend a good reference book that might help me understand rail travel?

Could you send me a link where there%26#39;s a Paris-Trier train?

I said in the other thread that the SNCF didn%26#39;t mention it and that normally means that it doesn%26#39;t exist. Maybe the Bahn site don%26#39;t list the possible connections that would exist between Paris and Trier?

Use the German National Railways web site-- http://www.diebahn.de --for the schedule. Perhaps the reason why SNCF does not show this route is because there isn%26#39;t a direct route. One must take a train from Paris and then switch at Brusells to Luxembourg, then again for Trier, Germany or take a train from Paris to Luxembourg and then switch for another onward to Trier. That%26#39;s at least one train switch and four(4) different national railways involved. I don%26#39;t think that the SNCF site is set-up to handle more than one(1).

Nice work KDK.

lindlee, if you%26#39;re having problems it%26#39;s %26#39;cos it%26#39;s not all that easy as KDK has shown . Looks like that railpass may be worth it !

Pteagen - I think this will get you to the page on bahn that I%26#39;m looking at for Paris to Trier:

bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en…

Some of their routes go through Luxembourg and some thru Saarbrucken. I%26#39;m hoping that the train changes they mention - some routes one, some more, are at the same train station! Since train travel, other than the week excursions on the DC, London and Paris Metros, is all new to me, I was hoping someone who has used the trains to travel outside of Paris could give me some insight as to what I may encounter.

Thanks for your responses!

Try the swiss rail web site - /www.sbb.ch/en/ for connections. I have been researching routes for a trip and the Swiss site seems to have every country and all the timetables. I am assuming they are accurate. a place to start anyway.

I woud suggest using the latest Thomas Cook European Timetable, it has all the main journeys.

The best way to get to Trier is from Luxembourg, I am not sure who runs the Luxembourg servic es it used to be Belgium (SNCB) as Luxembourg runs buses and not trains and other countries (France, Germany and Belgium) run the trains.
