The train should easily get you from Nice to Milan. Check out www.raileurope.com for schedules and approximate prices. The route takes you along the scenic French and Italian coasts through small villages and high cliffs. Great price for the ticket, and even better views.

if you can (esp if you are on a tight schedule) you should fly.... try easyjet, ryanair....i think it would be a very long drive or train trip. flying is often cheaper than railways

Don%26#39;t you need a visa if you travel from Nice to any part of Italy? Even thought you are a US passport holder? Or is one excluded to get a visa if you are coming from France (US citizens). Thanks.

Go to www.europebyair.com to see if there is a flight between Nice and Milan. All flights are $99 plus departure taxes, which vary. You can reserve in advance and there is no penalty for changing your flight.

There is a train that goes fom Nice to Milan but as there are a number of you you are treated as being a group and you will need to talk to SNCF (French Railways) as they like groups to book in advance (you may also get a reduction in some cases). There is unfortunately no restaurant car on the train anymore, but there should be a panoramic car.

There are two direct trains per day, that take 4h 45. One has a buffet (snacks %26amp; drinks). Many other trains available, change at Genoa.

See www.bahn.de (international guests) for details of any European (inc UK) rail trip. Every staion is included, and even buses in several countries.

Darn it! Just after I had given up finding discount flights or fast cheap trains for that same route, I see I had the solution all along. http://www.whichbudget.com/ seems to give an Italian discount airline covering that (I do not consider $100 discount).

I seem to recall that train route being expensive (may not benefit from the normal within-Italy subsidies) and can be slow and unscenic as it pokes thru endless tunnels and small stations.

Thank you for the whichbudget link, daft. I know I will be using it.

You may be right about the cost of a straight-through booking from Nice to Milan, but there is a way round that. Go to Ventimiglia and then take a train from Ventimiglia to Milan. Many more trains, and about 20 Euros I think, not including the Nice-Venti bit.

Yes, it%26#39;s not a fast route, but at 4 hours or so about as fast as you could do it by plane when you figure in getting to and from the airports, etc.

Tickets can be purchased at www.trenitalkia.it but with 13 people you%26#39;ll probably have to contact trenitalia by email. Of course you could just buy the maximum number allowable until you reach the number you need, I suppose.

And NiceasNice, no, US citizens don%26#39;t need any documents other than a passport to travel anywhere within the EU. In fact you may not even be asked for that these days.

Make that www.trenitalia.it

Sorry %26#39;bout that.
