The rap on US airlines' international flights

Some previous threads brought concensus that US airlines were cheap.

However, it seems that the US airlines are still like Asian airlines in one respect that put them above European airlines.

Stopovers don%26#39;t cost you an arm and a leg.

If you flew United from Chicago to Sydney, you could do a stopover in SF for free! (There might be a minimal airport tax or two.) Same if you flew Cathay Pacific from SF to Hanoi with a two day stopover in Hong Kong, or Singapore from SF to Mumbai with a stopover in Singapore or Hong Kong.

If you bought an Air France ticket for SF to Munich, you%26#39;d have to change planes in Paris no matter what. However, if you wanted to hang out in Paris for longer, like a few days, you%26#39;d get nailed with the prices of two separate airline tickets.

Are there exceptions in Europe?

but Darth...I did that on Air France and was not zapped any extra charges! I went from Miami to Florence, with a stopover of 5 days in Paris.

Really? When did you go to Florence?

I tried the trip to Munich last December.

Or are the European %26quot;restrictive%26quot; fares that much more restrictive?

Have flown to Hawaii with BA, with a free stopover in SF on the return journey, also Virgin offer free stopovers, for transatlantic flights.

summer of 2003....I think the rule is that you are allowed either a stopover or an open jaw.
