Carrying a backpack in Paris--have to check in at...

I just bought a small-ish Baggalini messenger bag for my upcoming trip to Paris. It has a strap that goes across your shoulder, but it rests on your back like a backpack (or you can have it rest in front of you if you need to for security reasons). I like the bag, but I%26#39;m a little worried that I will have to check it in at various locations, such as the Louvre, Musee d%26#39;Orsay, Eiffel Tower, stores if I am browsing? What are peoples experiences with carrying daybags/backpacks--do you have to check them in at these places? If so, what size bags do they make you check in? My bag seems kind of borderline, bigger than a purse, smaller than most backpacks. I just don%26#39;t want to have to pay 5 euros to check in my bag all around Paris ;o)

The Louvre our tour guide made us check in our bags and backpacks, but I don%26#39;t think it is necessary to do so. The Rodin museum it is mandatory. However, at the Orsay you don%26#39;t have to do so.
