Camping

Can anyone provide information on camping throughout France? Due to the length of our stay we were thinking of renting a motorhome. We have traveled by motorhome before, just not in Europe. We will be traveling throughout parts of France and Switzerland. Is this a mistake? Any local rental agencies or specific campgrounds?

Look at a UK campsite booking service %26#39;eurocampindependent.co.uk%26#39; - not to book with but because they have massive coverage of the top sites and full details of amenities etc.

I think there are probably more campsites in France than anywhere else in the world. In the summer just about every village of any size seems to have its own %26quot;camping municipal,%26quot; and there are hundreds of privately owned sites as well.

They range in amenities from the pretty basic to the luxurious. Some provide little more than an open field to stay in and toilet and shower facilities. Others have a full range of options, including swimming pools, restaurants and so on.

I would recommend that you get a copy of the Michelin Camping and Caravanning guide, which lists and grades a selection of sites all over France. Not that there aren%26#39;t plenty of good sites which have not made it into the guide, but this one is useful because you can carry it with you and refer to it any time you want.

You don%26#39;t say when you are planning to go, but, except in a few of the more popular places, such as along the Mediterranean coast, and in peak travel time, I have not found it necessary to pre-book most places.

I can only give you information on what we did a couple of years back. We stayed (in our own tent) at the municipal campsite at Montlouis on the banks of the Loire, not far from the lovely town of Amboise.

The showers/toilets were extremely clean although there weren%26#39;t many facilities on site but a good base on the Loire. If we weren%26#39;t out for the day sightseeing (visiting the vin yards/chateaux) in the area, we would just go into Amboise in the evening as short drive away and have a relaxing meal. We travelled from the Northwest of England by car/ferry to Calais via Paris to the Loire in one day to set up camp, and it was fine. We stayed a week but it was no where near enough - we thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
