Best way to get to Avignon from Paris

I am coming to France in May staying 2 weeks in Paris and then I have a week to explore other parts. From what I have read Provence is a must see!

Is Paris-Avignon rail a good option? How much and how long does it take?

Do I need to book ahead?

AA: Yes the rail is the best option. The TGV runs from Paris to Avignon. Book It takes about 2h35 mins. ASAP for the best price. You may book on http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ Click train at the top. If you need english there is a british flag at the bottom left hand corner of the home page. If you are able to book a PREM or iDTGV fare you will be about to print out the tickets on your home computer. If you dont get one of those fares, then select %26quot;france%26quot; as your country of residence, pay online with a credit card, then you may pick up your tickets at the train station. Be sure to take the credit card that you paid for the tickets with as well as your reservation number. Without these two items you will be unable to get your tickets.

Prems and iDTGV are the cheapest fares. The price will only go up so book the cheapest fare you can find now.

Note: There are 2 train stations in Avignon. The TGV station which is out of town but there is a shuttle provided to take you into town (1 euro I think). The in town station allows you to walk right into the city but the trip is about 50 miins longer because the bullet train cannot travel at high speed for the last leg of the trip. I suggest going to the TGV station and then transfering to the shuttle.

Many thanks. I have checked the website. It looks like about $90-$100 Euro Return.

I will ask more about Provence in future weeks before I go.

If you need a nice place to stay not far from Avignon and in the center of Provence, at one hour reach (maximum) of all interesting spots of Provence, try this address

Hope this will help you

Depending where you want to go, you might want to base yourself in the Fontvieille/Maussane-les-Alpilles/St.-Remy area, which is a bit farther south. Puts you within easy reach of the camargue. Lots of options in just about every price range here, and some lovely scenery too. I do have one recommendation - l%26#39;Oustaloun in Maussane - which is a quiet little village by current Provence standards. And the hotel is pleasant and very good value, or was, and has a good restaurant. I haven%26#39;t stayed there in three or four years though.

You will need a car to get about, and staying outside the larger towns is easier I think. Driving and parking in Arles and Avignon is not much fun. You can drive in as far as you want and then park and walk or take a bus to the center.

If I can help any other way let me know.

H- just returned from 10 days in France- I booked French Rail/Drive, it was a good deal, I added an extra train day, so for 2 people, 3 days train, 2 days car rental, it was less than $575! RailEurope: raileurope.com/us/…france_index.htm

-- We went TGV Paris to Avignon - yes, TGV station is outside Avignon, shuttle is fine to take, we had luggage and everything. From the shuttle drop, we got on a bus to our hotel, we stayed in Villeneuve, across the river from Avignon, at Hotel d%26#39;Atlelier - great. However, eat dinner in Avignon. City bus to Avignon very easy. After 2 days, picked up the rental car (TGV station) and headed south- toured Saint Remy and Les Baux, stayed in Arles for 2 days- parking really was ok there- always found a spot. Stayed at Hotel L%26#39;Amphitheatre- wonderful. Drove to the Camargue, took a river trip.. next day back to Avignon, returned the car, TGV to Aix, spent a few days, then TGV to Paris. Transportation was great. Provence is wonderful and the people are friendly, prices much better than Paris. If you want more info, let me know
