Has any one travel by train this route?
When is the best time of day to travel from Menton to Florence? Should we travel during the day or should we travel by night train?

Either a night train or a day train will work. I%26#39;ve taken the night train from Nice to Rome, which stops, I think, in Pisa where you would have to change trains for Florence. The problem with this option is that you will get into Pisa in the early hours of the morning and arrive in Florence still very early.
The day trains will probably be better but you will have to change probably at least in Genoa and/or in Pisa. It%26#39;s going to be about an 8 hour journey I think. The Italian railways site http://www.trenitalia.it/ will give you all your options.
I do recall that at night with a full moon the early part of the trip was very lovely and romantic - and then I slept.
Bon voyage!
