Paris in late May - hotel tips please

Hi all, first post here...the family is going to India in May but thought we would stop at Paris for 2-3 days as the fare is not bad for this kind of stopover.

But we are completely inexperienced in international travel (although with origins overseas!) and would like to hold within a budget but also get a good look at the city. I know 3 days is pitiful but that is what we have. :-(

We would be arriving in Paris in the AM on either May 21 or 22 and taking the outbound flight three mornings later, but have loads of questions, so any tips would be very valuable!

1) Can one leave baggage in say, the CDG airport, for example in a locker? I am thinking for the first day after landing but before check-in.

2) Is an airport hotel better or an in-city? I figure city, but am worried about the cost. (We are 2 adults and two girls, 14 and 10 and some searching is showing that many hotels have max 2 -person occupancy per room. We need to be in the same room for safety but above all, the cost).

3) Any strong tips on specific hotels would be great! We would prefer staying under 100 Euros a night but will go to maybe 125 (I know, big spenders!).

4) Anything else you would like to add would be welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Hi KCK

We are in a similar situation, we will be in Paris for only 2 days at the end of May. There are 3 of us, and we were also trying to find a place where we could all stay in one room. We booked at the hotel de L%26#39;esperance, its in the Latin Quarter, right by the market on Rue Moufftard. It was 103 Euro a night for a room to accomodate the three of us. It got a lot of good reviews on this website.

Your instincts are great. You are picking a fantastic city for a stop-over, although alas, 3 days is not enough. But it is enough to convince you that you will need to come back for a much longer stay...

1) I don%26#39;t know about lockers at CDG, I%26#39;ve never left bags there. But I presume that it is doable.

2) You%26#39;ll want to stay in the city of Paris itself, especially with the short time that you have. The commute into the city daily will be cumbersome and annoying and cut into the most precious commodity that you have for your stay, time. Although it is true that Paris is expensive in general for hotel lodging, there are deals to be found if you dig a little. I%26#39;d start by looking at the list of hotels here on tripadvisor. There are loose approximations for pricing on their list of hotels. You can work your way down looking for the hotel pricing that would be OK, then click on the links comparing pricing on the various discount hotel dealers. The final thing would be to visit the particular hotel%26#39;s site, find the e-mail address, and write the hotel directly. It%26#39;s OK to bargain with them. It allows you to find exactly the room specifications that you need, to receive a confirmation guaranteeing the room type/bedding type, etc. Plus the hotel itself can often give you the best rates that you%26#39;ll find. It%26#39;s how I almost always reserve a room when travelling to Paris now. There are some great hotels that are relative bargains on the tripadvisor list. I%26#39;m sorry that I can%26#39;t give you a specific recommendation, as I have to admit that we usually spend quite a bit on hotels in Paris, but other well-seasoned travellers have written great narratives/reviews of their stays at each of the hotels. Starting with Hotel des Croises (Langlois), currently ranked number 4 on tripadvisor%26#39;s list.

Dear KCK:

Have a look at Hotel Sofia, a little hotel not far away from Montmartre. They have Quad room at about 80 euros. It is more in the North of Paris, in the 18th ans so it would be quite easy to reach CDG from there. Staff is very nice . The hotel is simple but very clean.

Maybe it can correspond toyour search!

Have a nice trip!

Thanks for responses, hope to get some more! I tried the Langlois via email and they are sold out. :-(((

I am awaiting a response from the Sofia. If you recommended it it must be decent, but I see it is only 1 star. Is that a reliable guide and what does it refer to anyway?

We only want a place to crash, as we will be out pretty much all day. But clean, reasonably quiet, and safe are of course important.

Thanks again!

Happytravel, have you stayed at the Sofia? I browsed your posts and it seems you really know your Paris! Do you think this is really my best bet? The one star does concern me, but maybe that doesn%26#39;t mean a lot...?

Could not find any reviews or non-commercial info on this place but looks like a very good deal...

Any experience/opinion?

We found our hotel through www.parishotels.it It%26#39;s has a good selection of 1 star through 4 star hotels. Keep in mind that when it asks for your dates, the prices it will show you are for your entire stay, and the four stars are listed first and will be pricey. If you want to go straight to the 3 stars, it will give you the option to choose the type of hotel and then you can check availability, etc. I just checked and looked at dates of May 21 through May 24 (3 nights) and I found a 3-star for 175 Euro per night. Also, check http://fromentin.parishotels.it They have a quad room for 159 Euro per night including breakfast but it%26#39;s not available on May 21, although available (at this point) the 22, 23, 24. I have lots of Paris notes - If you would like a copy, please send me an email at vickisfloyd@hotmail.com and I%26#39;ll get a copy to you. Have a great trip. Is India going to be vacation, too?

KCK,

I tried looking for baggage storage in CDG airport and I was told that due to security reasons they have shut it down. Unfortunately I think this is now true for most airports.
